July 17, 2025

Since launching in 2018, the MySunrise Cancer Companion app has been empowering people throughout Devon and Cornwall, ensuring they feel informed and supported at every stage of their cancer journey.

Now live across trusts including Royal Cornwall Hospitals, Torbay & South Devon, University Hospitals Plymouth and Royal Devon University Hospitals this free app provides patients and carers with expert information and locally tailored support.

1. Get to know your local cancer services

The app delivers up-to-date, location-specific details about nearby hospital cancer services—covering clinics, treatment centres, and support hubs. Short videos feature South West-based oncologists, nurses, and radiographers introducing themselves and explaining what to expect. Practical tips on parking, local transport, and onsite amenities help families plan visits confidently. Personal stories from Devon and Cornwall residents add reassurance and relatability.

2. Learn about cancer and your treatment

MySunrise features verified content on common cancers and treatments – from diagnosis and chemotherapy to radiotherapy and surgery. It addresses management of side effects, emotional wellbeing, and clinical trials. The app also includes information specific to cancers prevalent in the South West region.

3. Get healthy for treatment

Known as prehabilitation, this feature supports physical and mental readiness for treatment. It includes advice on:

  • Staying active at your own pace
  • Nutrition to support treatment
  • Emotional wellbeing and stress management
  • Improving sleep patterns and reducing smoking and alcohol
Evidence shows that preparing your body and mind beforehand leads to better recovery outcomes.

4. Watch videos about your local trust

Tailored videos offer virtual tours of hospital treatment environments across Devon & Cornwall, featuring real staff and subtitled in multiple languages commonly spoken in the region. These help ease anxiety by familiarising patients with locations and staff before appointments.

5. Find the right support

Users can easily connect with their clinical nurse specialists via the built-in Contact Centre. The app also links to local support groups, Macmillan information services, and wellbeing events across Devon and Cornwall, making sure patients feel connected throughout and beyond their treatment.
