Haematology and Oncology Mount Everest Challenge

News
October 27, 2022

Who will come out on top??

On Monday 1st March, the Haematology and Oncology teams of the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital will battle it out head-to-head, collectively covering the equivalent of scaling Everest (a 130-kilometre round trip) as many times as possible within one week. The goal for each team is to cover the greatest distance and get the most team members to the top of Everest.

This is a joint fundraising venture between the two departments, in support of Exeter Leukaemia Fund (ELF) and FORCE Cancer Charity.

Register for the pride of your department whilst raising money for these two great causes!

The Challenge:

From 1st to 7th March, participants from both teams will record the distance they walk per day using the Strava App (available on iPhone, Android and GPS watches).

Haematology and Oncology will each have their own individual Strava team page, this will show all members the accumulative total of each team’s distance covered per day. At the end of the week, the team who has completed the most 130-kilometere circuits is the winner. Glory and bragging rights are theirs!

Both teams will share one fundraising page. All donations and sponsorship will be automatically split 50/50 between ELF and FORCE.

Step One: Sign up to your team

Register with Strava for free at - https://www.strava.com/ Then join your chosen department’s team page:

https://www.strava.com/clubs/rdehaematology

https://www.strava.com/clubs/rdeoncology

If you are using a FitBit or Garmin, make sure that you link it to Strava.

You are then ready to clock up the miles - walking around the ward on your shift - and fit in any additional steps that you can at home.

Just make sure that you record your steps.  If you are using the Strava app, hit ‘record’ when you start – then ‘finish’ followed by ‘save’ at the end.  If you are using a Fitbit or Garmin – select ‘Walk’ from your activity options, then wait for a GPS signal.  Once you’ve got this, select ‘Start’ – do your thing, then select ‘Finish’ at the end.

Step Two: Sponsorship

Ask your friends, family and colleagues to sponsor you and request donations to the shared fundraising page - https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/EverestChallenge2021

Step Three: Compete!

Over the seven days, every step that you take will contribute towards your team’s total. This includes your working day and any walking you undertake at home.

Check out how your team is faring against your opposition by joining the Facebook Event page – ‘Climbing Everest Challenge’.  You can also add any updates/photos here.

ELF and FORCE will provide daily progress updates via their social media channels and to the Facebook Event page.

At the end of the seven days, we will confirm which team has completed the furthest distance, how many team members they managed to scale Everest and how much money the challenge has raised.

Good luck!
